Birds Of Tokyo | Superglue feat. Stand Atlantic
A little wine. And some superglue.
We’ve all been through heartbreak. Losing someone we trust, adore and have shared a life with is possibly the most painful experience in the world. Birds Of Tokyo’s new song “Superglue” is a raw and uncompromising piece of music that confronts this issue of heartbreak head-on.
To create a music video for this track that would capture the essence of memories with a person you once knew, we embarked on a technically ambitious VFX project to create an immersive experience of photos on a wall coming to life and telling the story of lost love.
Pop Music Video by Found At Sea
Birds Of Tokyo needed the style and content for their new music video to be bold yet understated – elevating the emotion of their music without distracting from it. The idea of a wall of memories as photos that would come alive resonated strongly with the band and became the chosen creative under the direction of Zachary Lynch-Woodlock. The question then shifted to determining what was the best way to achieve this outcome.
For this music video, we had the opportunity to partner with Harry Dakanalis from D1 Studios who provided us with access to a programmable robotic camera system which not only allowed us to create our music video in a single, uninterrupted take, but also do several takes with camera movements exactly reproduced. With this in mind, we came up with a creative VFX approach that involved filming takes with miniature green screens on a wall in place of the photos we wished to fill with moving videos of our performers. A separate take would be used to capture our “plate shots” that would allow us to insert the blank wall background behind the photos would be added in as CGI.
Once individual photo frames were colour keyed, motion tracking was used to align the videos of our performers with the positions of the photo frames on the screen. In instances where photos were placed on top of one another, this required multiple layers of colour keying to be applied. By only keying the photographs physically placed into shot and creating the static photo collages in CGI behind them, we streamlined the VFX process without compromising the quality of the final video.
