Great works of architecture should elicit emotion – emotion in both design and materiality. This publication, Materiality 2021 by Brickworks, is a celebration of not just brick and block architecture, but also the passion and creativity of great Australian and North American architects over the last three years.
Materiality 2021 is a diverse and expansive cross-section of architectural excellence, focused on the use of brick construction across residential and commercial building projects.
The video series we directed and produced for Brickworks captures interviews with five architects – each of which designed and oversaw the construction of notable architectural projects featured in this landmark publication.
Filmed on location in the Brickworks Sydney Design Studio we had the fulfilling opportunity to hear and learn from architects Stephen Varaday, Hannah Tribe (Tribe Studio), Kerstin Thompson (KTA), Ingrid Richards & Adrian Spence (Richards & Spence), Tristan Wong (SJB) and Carolina Alvarez (Turner Studio).
We were honoured to be given the opportunity to tell these stories of architects from across Australia and the world, and look forward to bringing you even more inspiring stories of creativity into the future.

Materiality Launch Campaign by Found At Sea
The brief for this project was simple and straightforward – liaise with architects across the country, invite them to Sydney, and capture what they had to share about their work. We touched on their use of brick in these projects and the importance of architectural publications as records of moments in time and celebrations of creativity and ingenuity.
One of the things we love about our work is that we get to meet and speak with thought leaders from a range of industries. Architecture is no exception. Having the opportunity to listen to architects speak about the driving passions in their lives inspires us to also do the best work we can do in our profession.
